Description

This excellent museum is part of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation Network of Museums (PIOP). It is situated on the slopes of one of the green hills that surround Lake Stymphalia. Its aim is to raise the ecological awareness of visitors, both young and old, and to preserve knowledge of the region’s traditional technologies.

The first section in the museum has information on the environment in the surrounding area and on its importance. In the second section you will learn how the environment affected the development of human activity - particularly traditional occupations. The museum achieves this through displays, models, original digital representations and films. Inside the museum there is an open aquarium that represents a cross-section of the lake, with live fish and plants from the area.

The multi-purpose hall hosts temporary exhibitions and events and cultural activities are held there.

You can read more about the museum at https://www.piop.gr/en  and see a digital representation of Lake Stymphalia here

Stymphalia Lake Run
The Stymphalia area comes alive in May as running enthusiasts arrive to take part in the Stymphalia Lake Run. There are 5 km, 10 km and half marathon routes starting from the Stymphalia Environment Museum and circling the lake. For children aged 5-12, there is a 1 km Iolaos baby route where they can run and have fun - with written consent from their parents.

The competitions are organised and supported by the Municipality of Sicyon "MIKONI" Sicyon Education, Culture and Sports society, Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) and the Nemea Sports Club in collaboration with the Lafka "Stymphalis" Sports Club
Participants pay a nominal amount which the organisers then donate to child welfare charities.
